Character Development Process

Where did it start?

Character creation has always been a passion for me, alongside building awe-inspiring worlds to go with them. My primary influences with characters really started to kick in with the game Final Fantasy XIII, as I just loved their designs and how well they blended in with the world they lived in. The varying designs of characters and their individual traits

As I was building games, alongside this hobby I also was drawing comics in my spare time. Most of them where mainly fantasy themed with my own original stories. I drafted up characters initially before making these comics, which would drive me further to bring them to life on paper.

Back in 2011, I created 2D games on a site called Mygamebuilder and drew up lots of pixelated sprite characters for my own imagined RPG and Fighting games.

I came up with a series called AFS (All Fighting Stars) Tournament, where Champions based on different existing games would fight against each other, similar to Super Smash Bros.

How I ended up progessing in Character Design

My sprite art for characters would eventually improve as I would add more shading, detail and more accuracy. My pixelated art was considered unique in the Mygamebuilder community as I would use the maximum sprite size which would be around 512x512 whereas most other games would utilize much smaller pixel size dimensions for their characters.

I normally used bigger sizes because I wanted to bring my characters to life in the games I created and wanted to bring out as much of their visual detail as possible.

Initialization phases would always involve concepting design ideas on raw paper which would lead onto the in-game renditions of these characters. As I did it for most of my original games created, I would like to show an example of some of my biggest RPG games that I made.
